In his canon, Sylar has the grisly ability to acquire the superpowers of others by cracking open their heads and studying their brains. The reason he can do this is because he himself has the power of intuitive aptitude (knowing "how things work"), and this is the only special ability that he wakes up with at Landel's. Due partly to this power and partly to his background, he's particularly skilled at building and repairing watches, and he's also keenly perceptive of the emotions of others; in the context of the Institute, Sylar is able to use this power to discern how miscellaneous gadgets work even if he is unfamiliar with their making and he can easily lockpick orange-level doors. Sylar is still able to acquire powers from a fellow patient's brain, but not from a monster's or a staffmember's. However, there are some limitations to this: 1) powers he gets are just as weakened as they were for their original users; 2) he suffers from a horrible migraine for a full day/night cycle after acquiring the ability whenever he even thinks about using it; 3) he can have one decent burst of one stolen power per night; once he does, he will be assaulted with more crippling migraines if he tries to execute another; 4) he can only have a maximum of three abilities other than his original power, and if he attains any more than that, the new ones begin replacing the old. Of course, Sylar absolutely cannot kill any patient or acquire their power unless his player has obtained express permission from both that character's player and the mods. | |

If your character has never met Sylar before, they probably won't recognize him as anything more than a fellow patient trying to escape. If they sit down and have a conversation with him, they'll find that Sylar is an attentive listener and comes off as extremely empathetic, reading a person's emotions with ease and sharing his own philosophies and experiences to show others that he understands them. He's soft-spoken, though talkative, and will be eager to help your character if they express need for it. Only the most perceptive character would be able to sense something off about Sylar, that something just doesn't feel right... | |

In reality, Sylar is a conscienceless sociopath, a cold-blooded murderer who cares only about himself and furthering his own goals to attain power. More than anything else, Sylar desires to be special, and after having acquired a slew of powerful abilities through the murder of innocent people in his home world, he's still aiming for more. He swears by Darwin and his own theory of "survival of the fittest," believing that those who aren't strong enough to defend themselves against him deserve to be killed and have their powers taken. While the things he says to those he's deceiving are usually true on some level, he uses his honesty to manipulate rather than to comfort, and he's quick to betray any "allies" he's made as soon as it becomes convenient for him to do so. Once he does reveal his true self, he takes pleasure in provoking people by drawing attention to their greatest weaknesses and insecurities; he loves seeing the reactions of others to his intimidation and will often go out of his way to test a person's psychological breaking point, even if it means jeopardizing his cover. | |

{ Heroes season 1 spoilers! } Before becoming a murderer, Sylar was a watchmaker named Gabriel Gray, born to and raised by a watchmaker and his wife in New York City. Those parents were much of the reason why Gabriel became so emotionally unstable; his father was overbearing in wanting him to take over the family business while his mother encouraged him to do anything but. In fact, the main pillar of Sylar's characterization--that he wants to be special--isn't his own desire in and of itself, even if he thinks it is. Rather, it comes from his desperation to be accepted by his mother, who throughout his life urged him to be something more, someone better, and who only saw her son as someone who could be, not as someone who was. It was when Chandra Suresh, a geneticist who believed in the evolution of super-abilities in humans, contacted Gabriel that things really changed. Suresh raised Gabriel's hopes of being special; he then crushed them by telling Gabriel that perhaps he didn't have any powers after all. It was then that Gabriel finally snapped and discovered the gruesome potential of his somewhat mundane, original ability (the power to "see how things work") and his identity as Sylar, a Darwin-preaching serial killer, was solidified. From then on, Sylar devoted his entire life to hunting down others with abilities and murdering them, studying their brains, and stealing their powers. He became a truly evil being; his only moral dilemma occurred when he found out he was possibly destined to blow up all of New York, and he reverted back to an even more deranged version of his murderer self when he accidentally killed his mother, his only real connection to his humanity. | |

This Sylar was apped pre-S3 and has had extended character development/relations that contradict the canon and retcon revealed after the end of S2. Because of these circumstances, this Sylar will remain free of both the incongruous personality traits and the history that the series gives him post-S2, including all biological ties and pie-related incidents. | |
